declaregamuza: (You're something beautiful)
[personal profile] declaregamuza posting in [community profile] spira_rp
Winter rarely snuck up on places. Summer turned to autumn, with the acceptably warm days and pleasantly cool nights, and slowly it got darker and chillier, and wetter until the rain turned to snow. You knew winter was coming, because it crept in like it was late for class.

Except in the Desert Palace, where the weather could be tuned to whatever the residents preferred at a whim, on account of the weather machine. Marluxia, who claimed dominion over the gardens in an unofficial but nonetheless authoritative manner, had insisted on an autumn environment for a time. Few had complained; autumn had meant the trees that fruited had borne fruit, and they'd been able to move between locations to give themselves pleasant, cooler weather for as long as possible. They only knew a few locations for definite on the machine, but they were able to access a wide enough variety of climates and weather patterns that suggested the machine could give them weather from all around Spira, including, though Marluxia had vehemently disagreed with the suggestion, the possibility of eternal summer.

When the settings that had been giving them autumn were clearly starting to become unpleasantly wintery themselves, they changed the settings back to the old faithful one they'd used for winter before. Which meant that everyone in the Palace woke up to a six inch blanket of snow that was growing steadily deeper as large flakes of icy fluff showered down from the sky. The sky was white, and eerily bright. The Malboros in the garden still tracked their usual paths, but they did so with a growing dusting of snow on their heads, and their tentacular roots lost to view.

Inside the Palace, the Warsend decorations had been brought out of storage. It would, however, take a few hours to make the inside look as seasonal as the outside, and require volunteers to do so.

Marluxia stood at the door with his arms folded. There were several ways out into the gardens; the preferred one being the kitchen, another from the sunhouse, and another being what had likely once been a patio. It had been overgrown, and disused, accessible only from one of the corridors Vexen's explorations had yielded. From the inside the door had been fixed so it was now usable once more, and the view from the doorway was of the lake, and the summer house.

Snow disguised the lake already, leaving it little more than a ridge in the landscape recognisable only due to familiarity.

Snow was Marluxia's least favourite weather. As much as winter was necessary, he disliked it, and he disliked it more now than he recalled having done in the past. There was, however, something to be said for the Palace, and its weather machine. It meant winter could be controlled, until the garden was ready. There had been no sudden frosts to bite at plants that were unprepared for the chill. Marluxia had been given the time to protect the more delicate plants before winter arrived, and allow the hardier ones to shed their leaves and finish their fruit in readiness.

The Malboros weren't happy. Many of them were breeds from warmer climes, but Marluxia was confident they'd weather the change in season, so to speak.

The air had a bite to it, and the snow still fell as if someone was sprinkling confetti on the world. Part of Marluxia wanted to go out to the greenhouse and check the temperatures there. Another part of him wanted to stay inside and, effectively, hibernate. That he put down to instincts related to his chakra type.

He imagined Vexen was in his element in more ways than one. He, personally, was already looking forward to spring.

He turned his attention in Lumi's direction. He was another like Vexen, of course, who would find no issue in the sudden turn for the icy.

Lumi, in a very general sense, objected to mornings.

They were often starkly bright, something extremely unwelcome in the early hours, and there was little to be done about that short of simply leaving the curtains closed. This was what he tended to do as a rule. Daytime wasn't permitted in his room until after a suitably caffeinated beverage had been consumed.

He had, at least, gotten used to the fact that the various times of the day felt different to each other. It hadn't been easy to get used to it, but he had grown accustomed to, if not embraced, the different temperatures that spanned the day and night.

This morning, and his clock had told him it was, indeed, morning and throwing back the bedclothes informed him in no uncertain terms that it was also cold. He didn't mind the cold, but the chill had been ...sudden. That was when Marluxia had knocked on his door and asked him to meet him at the newly discovered patio near Even's end of the palace. Robbed of a lie in, Lumi had dressed himself, got up, and bypassed the kitchen and all of its caffeine-rich goodness and made his way to the corridor.

If Marluxia wanted to meet there, he either wanted to talk to him out of the way, or take him to the Greenhouse he tended. Either way, it likely meant that Marluxia had something to say that he would prefer wasn't overheard by the other denizens of the palace. Not an easy feat when the walls had ears.

The chill seemed to grow as Lumi got further and further away from the Palace's inhabited centre. Even's wing was distant, both newly discovered and newly reclaimed, and didn't benefit from the heat of the fires made in other rooms. It smelled, to his sharp nose, of what he had quite recently discovered to be neglect, abandonment and dust. A few hours shut up in an abandoned, dusty room in Lindblum had made them familiar enough to him to put a name to.

There was something else, though. Another scent, a new one. It was similar to the feather-faint after-effect of Even's Chakra, but too strong to be that. It was nearly rich, crisp and beneath that was a pleasant note of something he couldn't separate from Marluxia -- plants. The door was open, then.

He saw his breath curl in the air as he got halfway down the corridor and felt the touch of a chilly breeze blowing in from outside.

When he got there, he nodded to his waiting companion. About say say 'you wanted to speak to me?', he opened his mouth, and ... stopped at the sight beyond the open door. Everything was white. The usual browns and greens had been almost completely covered. The grey stone of the ruins remained their usual colour, as did some of the vertical stems of the plants that crawled up them, but the tops... and the ground... all of them were blanketed.

"Snow," he said, quietly, and perhaps a touch foolishly.

He'd seen it in pictures, and knew what it was, just as any Spiran child knew what a Pyrefly was, but seeing it first hand was very different to seeing a photograph.

"Mm," Marluxia acknowledged, taking a step back from the doors and leaving his breath behind, curling in the air, "snow."

Not his favourite kind of weather. They'd avoided it the last time winter had struck the Palace, finding reason to be away while Marluxia had abandoned his garden to the winter. His garden, not the Palace's.

"Your namesake, I believe?" He asked, tilting his head as he watched Lumi, and watched his reactions. "And your first time seeing it in person."

They'd flown over it before, but Lumi had never experienced the chill before, the crunch of snow underfoot, the delicate way falling snow gathers on hair and eyelashes and clothing, turning everyone caught in it as white as Lumi himself. When Marluxia had been young, he'd enjoyed the snow. Most children did. Then he'd grown older, and snow had started to be a bother, and then eventually, snow had grown to be an enemy.

"I'm surprised you remember that," Lumi said, stepping a little closer to the open door, "but you're right, about both."

He stared out at the garden, sparing Marluxia only a brief glance as he stepped back. In the face of the relentless brightness of the garden, Lumi's pupils narrowed to tight, line-like slits. He saw a fresh, icy breeze ruffle Marluxia's hair out of the corner of his eye and he inhaled, mentally solving the mystery as to why the unfamiliar scent had reminded him vaguely of Even's chakra signature.

It was what snow smelled like. He was surprised that snow, something he knew to be comprised of frozen water, had a scent, but it did. It was cold, and fresh, and unique.

He watched the flakes fall, almost surprised at being able to hear them as they landed on the already fallen snow. The pictures and videos he'd seen hadn't quite managed to accurately portray the way the light sent sparkles across the unbroken surface, either.

Marluxia's mouth curled in a self satisfied smirk. "I pay attention," he said. Another breath formed in the air in front of him, and for a moment the only noise was the gentle hiss of falling snow. It was the sound of billions of tiny shards of ice hitting each other, quiet, and pervasive.

"It suits you," he said. His smile lingered as he spoke. "Starkly beautiful, astoundingly cold, and a silent killer. It's easy to see why you were named for it." Someone had high hopes of Lumi. Marluxia would idly wondered if that person had personal experience of snow themselves, or if the name was mere serendipity.

He turned his eyes to Lumi, just after he spoke. Watching Lumi's face for a response almost more than he listened for it.

Lumi turned his eyes in Marluxia's direction, his eyebrows raised a fraction in what could only be taken as surprise. It wasn't an expression he wore often. Then he gave a short, soft laugh and turned back towards the snow, shaking his head.

"It's too early for you," he said.

He looked out into the distance, noticing how the snowflakes appeared nearly black against the backdrop of the white sky. It was a strange effect. The white sky was strange enough in and of itself, but that was something else.

Amuusement broke out on Marluxia's face. His laughter was a low, deep chuckle, originating in the throat, and his smile showed teeth.

"As a gardener, it isn't my preferred weather," he said, following Lumi's gaze up to the sky, "but even I can appreciate the aesthetics." If not the side effects. It was a pity Vexen fashioned himself after the side effects, rather than taking after the appearance.

"How is your shoulder today?" He asked, changing the subject slightly. Weather effects could impact individuals of particular chakra types, if not realistically than at least in terms of personal comfort. Vexen disliked heat, where Marluxia felt an internal recoil at ice. Lumi had not allowed himself to wallow in temporary disability after being shot, and had returned to work as quickly as he could, but Marluxia suspected the effort may have exacted more of a toll than Lumi would have liked. With the weather going in his elemental favour, perhaps it was a good day, today.

thesilentstorm: Exhaustion (Additional One)
From: [personal profile] thesilentstorm
Lumi listened to him laugh with a small smile on his face, albeit one largely hidden by his hair. Marluxia never did or said anything accidental or careless. They were similar that way. Both tended to think over what was to be said before they let it past their lips, so they knew well the reactions they were likely to get from their words.

He turned back to him, his expression back to a quiet neutral, when he asked about his shoulder. He kept the frown from his face, but his unhappiness was evident in the set of his jaw all the same.

"Better than it was," he said, after a moment, resisting the near-reflexive need to roll his shoulder.

After getting out of the infirmary, he had spent more than a few days in his room, suffering the immediate effects of having been shot. It was something he had experience of, and he healed quickly, but that didn't stop the pain from biting or the lack of use from causing mild irritation.

The magic, an aspect of the process he Wasn't used to, helped, and Neliel, despite her obvious dislike for Marluxia and, to a lesser degree, him, had been forthcoming with as much of that as was advisable. She had also changed dressings without trying to take samples up until the surface wound had healed over.

The discomfort had abated but not fully receded in the weeks following. Wonderweiss's little victory had been an event that had pulled him from his room a little too early, but the rest of the healing had been as gradual as could be expected. There was no wound now, just a scar, and his range of movement had drastically improved suggesting there wasn't any major nerve damage, but it still wasn't back to normal.

His attempt to get back to work, a venture that had taken him away from socially and legally acceptable mark hunting and back into the riskier, more lucrative work of his pre-Spira days had been both good and bad. On the one hand, he found it to be liberating. On the other... it had probably been too early.

"It still doesn't feel right," he said.

Magic bullets, it seemed, came with their own set of trials.

Marluxia murmured unhappily. The problem was that it took time for wounds to heal, and magical wounds were slower still. Marluxia didn't have much experience of gunshot wounds and the healing thereof, so he didn't know how quickly they should be expected to heal. Lumi seemed more familiar with the procedure on that front, but the addition of magic had thrown in an extra element to deal with.

He glanced out across the gardens, thoughts ticking over in his mind. He'd done a little reading since Lumi's injury, and Neliel had given what information she could. Right now they were pursuing the usual avenues, but Marluxia, who found his reading material frequently contained information about alternative therapies because the people that wrote about the healing or poisonous or magical properties of various plants tended to assume their readership was of a particular mindset with regards to traditional healing, had read of a few others. How worth the effort they may be remained to be seen. On an unfamiliar world it could be hard to discern the difference between homeopathic nonsense about the vibration energy of crystals, and something that actually worked.

"It may be worth asking Neliel if there is anything else that may help." She was, after all, the white mage, and had been doing a respectable job of assisting so far, despite her obvious personal feelings with regards to them both. "I've heard of a couple of things, but I'm not as familiar with the healing techniques of this world as she is."

prayingmantis: Grumpy. (Silently you wait ...)
From: [personal profile] prayingmantis
Nnoitra, having woken up in the cold of his room, had immediately found himself grumpy. Cold weather wasn't his favourite. He didn't have any real climate issues that made him unused to it, where he'd grown up had been four-seasonal, he just didn't like it. It was probably a side effect of not having much to him.

He, unlike some, went to the window to see what the weather outside was like. To his surprise, it looked like a quaint Warsend card. Everything was blanketed with a coat of fluffy, white, unblemished snow. It was enough to make you sick.

He could have poked at the fire to warm the room up, but instead he showered, grumped more as he had to step out of hot water into a cold room, dried, dressed and headed downstairs to the kitchen which, even if it didn't have a fire going, would almost certainly have available coffee or even tea, which came a close second.

Unfortunately, when he got there, it also had Szayel. Nel was acceptable, for Nel made coffee without needing to be asked, or begged, but Szayel... he was expected, but never welcome, like gas after a cabbage dinner.

Szayel only acknowledged Nel with a grunt when she entered the kitchen. He, personally, had woken that morning and attended to his usual routine, which always culminated in coffee in the kitchen and waiting for other people to wake up. Part of Szayel enjoyed being infuriatingly chirpy at the reluctant early risers. The only person in the Palace that routinely woke up before him was Lilinette, and she was probably off playing with the Dreamhares.

His Hollow was ice elemental. Szayel was not. He wasn't fond of snow, but it didn't bother him the way it would have done had he not been fused with a Hollow of that type. Mostly, the weather was an infuriation. Snow outside inevitably meant that someone would bring it inside, thinking they were being funny or clever.

He glanced in Nnoitra's direction when he made his entrance. "Don't you look cheerful this morning," he said, drily, and cupped his coffee in both hands as he brought it to his lips.

"Morning," Nnoitra said to Nel, and to Szayel, "shut the fuck up."

He sat down in one of the chairs and glared at the window with his eye narrowed. He, unlike some of the resident idiots, idiots like Grimmjow, wouldn't be going outside to throw handfuls of that shit at other people. It made your fingers numb and stingy and then your hands burned and felt thick and weird when they started warming up again.

Having more than two hands didn't make the prospect any more inviting, even if it did kind of give you the edge during the whole throwing part.

"No one else up yet?" Just because it was early didn't mean that people hadn't been in and then left. It was unlikely, but some of the members travelled in the small hours, presumably to avoid people like the Arrancar.

Szayel raised an eyebrow at the way Nnoitra spoke to him. It wasn't unusual for Nnoitra to be abrupt and unpleasant company, that was, unfortunately, just Nnoitra. Still, he was a little grumpier seeming this morning even than usual.

"Charming," he said, into his coffee. "You know, masturbating first thing in the morning would really improve your mood." He took a sip of his coffee, and inhaled deeply, savouring the scent.

Marluxia was first through the door into the kitchen. His hands were going numb, and where his clothes were wet was rapidly growing uncomfortable, and unfortunately, his clothes were very wet at the back where Lumi had pinned him into the snow.

The usual suspects were populating the kitchen already. Neliel was a welcome sight, Nnoitra less so, and Szayel would only be a welcome sight through the crosshairs of a sniper's scope, but alas, he had to be endured for now.

Walking into the kitchen was like walking into a wall of heat compared to outside, and the snow on his clothes and in his hair began to melt. He flexed his fingers as the familiar burning ache set in. The Malboros had dashed inside the greenhouse as quickly as their tentacles would move them. Marluxia, right now, didn't exactly blame them.

He brushed what snow he could from his hair and clothes as he moved aside for Lumi.

Nnoitra rather thought that getting to smack Szayel in the teeth first thing in the morning would improve his mood more, but Nel didn't like when he made threats of bodily harm so early, so he managed to hold his opinion in. There was plenty of time for that later.

He looked up as the kitchen door opened and raised his eyebrows at the sight of the two original Ryoka, both looking snowy.

He didn't comment. Had they been anybody else, he might have, but these two were on his short list of people not to fuck with.

Lumi stood outside, under the overhang, and brushed snow from his shoulders and shook it from his hair. It had started falling thick and fast since the conclusion of their snowball fight and it was already covering their tracks from the greenhouse. It wouldn't be long before it became impossible to tell the direction they'd come from.

Snow wasn't as bad as other weather, he decided. It looked nice, at least. On the downside, lengthy exposure resulted in sogginess as body heat melted the snow into water. On top of it, people who had both normal body temperatures and non-Ice elements would suffer from the negative effects of the cold.

When relatively free of snow, he walked in after his companion, somehow still as almost pale as usual despite the cold air he'd been in for the majority of his morning so far.

Szayel regarded the two Ryoka a little more critically. In all likelihood, Marluxia had been attending to his precious garden. He'd had them hold winter off for as long as was reasonable, but sudden inches of snow overnight were unlikely to have been factored into his plans, whatever they were. Lumi, of course, went wherever Marluxia went.

"You two got up very early, didn't you?" He smirked after he spoke, his eyes lingering more on Lumi than Marluxia. He seemed unaffected by the cold part of snow, but he was still inconvenienced by the wet.

Marluxia glanced at Szayel, but ignored him in favour of giving Nel a disarming smile that he didn't expect to work. She was wary of him, though he was sure he'd never given her reason to be. "Long enough," he said. "The Malboros largely come from warmer climes, I thought it best to let them into the greenhouse, given the weather."

What snow had stuck to him had melted in the relative warmth of the kitchen. He'd likely require a shower, he knew, as well as a change of clothes. His hair was really quite wet with meltwater already.

"I intend to warm up, and then change."

He looked at Szayel, wondering what he was getting at with the comment.

The brightness of the kitchen would usually be enough to reduce Lumi's pupils to thin slits. As it was, it seemed a lot dimmer than the stark whiteness of the outside, so they widened in response to the lower light.

He regarded Szayel with his typically flat expression. He didn't like Szayel. He lacked the necessary brain-to-mouth filter that stopped other people getting frequently hit for stumbling across the boundaries that marked what it was acceptable to say to virtual strangers.

"Obviously," he said, fixing him with a look that shifted subtly from neutral to mild disdain.
