Even didn't bother to mention to Szayel that that wasn't the point, the point was to assess whether a group of 'back row' fighters could hunt dinner if they weren't being handheld by the more warlike of the team, but he didn't see the point in explaining.
Szayel obviously had the same irritating tendency as Hojo for needing to get the last word in. He kind of hoped he wouldn't drop that habit, because with any lucky, he would be returning to the Palace after the trip with no teeth.
