Zexion listened to them talk past a fuzz of disbelief.
Axel was a traitor, but so was Marluxia. What had first appeared to be a quiet would-be coup on Marluxia's part had turned out to be so much deeper than that. Axel had pretended to sympathise with Marluxia's cause on the orders of Saix -- Zexion's discovery of that fact had been the catalyst for his departure -- though it hadn't stopped Axel ridding Marluxia of his enemies within the group to prove his false loyalty. Axel had only ever had any regard for Saix and, according to the words of the others, when their interests clashed, Axel had betrayed him too. Zexion struggled to understand the motivations of any of them despite what he had witnessed or heard second hand after the fact.
The fact of the matter was, Axel must have been with the group for long enough for the anger to subside. Saix was stubborn, but he and Axel had a past together, even before their hearts were lost. They were best friends and, while a lot of unpleasantness happened between them while they were Nobodies, they must have somehow connected again as Lea and Isa if not Axel and Saix.
That said, it was apparent to Zexion that Axel was not yet trusted. There was nothing in his manner that would suggest such a thing, but the fact that Axel wielded traditional weapons as opposed to summoning them was more telling than anyone could know.
The girl, interesting though her abilities were, was a mystery to him.
