Just after Saix's attempt to wind Grimmjow up, Aerith finished casting protect, and it wrapped around first Saix, and then Axel. Then she focused herself again to back them both up with regen, too.
Then she knew she'd have to protect herself. She wouldn't put it past these people to employ a similar tactic to the nasties from Midgar; attacking the healer to get rid of them first.
