He felt like a small child sat in Even's office, admitting this to him. The only other person that knew he couldn't really read was Tayuya, but he'd always pretended to her that it was because he didn't have the patience. If he dressed it up in bravado, he could pretend that not being able to read was down more to choice than a flat out inability.
"I'll learn magic faster than I'll learn to read," he said, as if it was an explanation. "If you can only teach me magic, that's enough."
It would be enough to keep him alive, at least, and maybe he'd have a bit more luck learning magic the way the Ryoka had. They couldn't have sat down with a bunch of tedious scrolls and studied, at least some of it was innate.
